This cantilever barn is in Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I have heard two theories of why this barn, and others in East Tennessee, were built this way. The first is that the buildings were taxed based on their footprint, or how much of the building touched the ground. In this case, with the large building supported by two pillars, the footprint is very small compared to the actual building size. The other explanation is threefold.
