Misquamicut Beach – E1031

Thanks to all our friends, old and new, who stopped by to visit us in Chantilly this past weekend — we had a great time. We managed to get the van loaded and we were on the road just before the heavy rain set in. The rain never really let up all the way home, and it’s still raining this morning. Today’s Photograph of the Day is a companion piece to E1034 posted on March 1,...

B&W Tide – C3307

This was one of those mornings that when I get to my destination, the sky is a solid black overcast that gradually changes through shades of gray and ends up as a solid white overcast. So when I don’t have what I came for — in this case a sunrise view of the Watch Hill Light — I can either head back home, or I try to find something unexpected to photograph. It’s time to see what’s there. Instead of looking out toward the lighthouse, I looked down at my feet and saw all of these wonderful patterns the waves were making as they washed over the rocks. I have been visiting Beavertail Light in Jamestown, RI as long as I can remember. Beavertail is probably one of the most popular locations in RI for photographers and painters. It is also very popular for fishing, walking, jogging, or just relaxing. This photograph was from a late afternoon just as a large storm was ending. The waves were very active, and the sky had that crisp newly scrubbed look. The waves had so much energy, and the water was moving so fast, that I ended up taking 85 shots just to get the one I wanted. Most of my shots were just a little too early, or a little too late, to get the...

Flying Horse Carousel – C0518

Why are they flying horses? The horses are suspended from chains, so instead of just the usual motion, these horses fly through the air. This is the oldest carousel of it’s type in the country. And perhaps the oldest. It was built in 1876 and is located at Watch Hill in Westerly, RI. The horses have real horse hair tails and leather saddles. There are some additional close-ups on my website. I was lucky enough to get there just before the horses were taken in for the winter...
