Doyles River Falls – B1880

If you have ever hiked toDoyles River Falls in Shenandaoh National Park, you have probably noticed that it has two levels. The first level drops into a pool which then has several rivulets that cascade down from there. Normally there is so much water that it is difficult and dangerous to cross the river and climb to get a view of the pool. This year with all of the snow melt and the ground saturated with water, it would be particularly difficult. When I photographed this view the area was in a bit of drought, so it was pretty easy to make my way over for this view of the upper...

Ramsey Cascades Panorama – E0702

One more waterfall added to my collection of portrait orientation panoramas. This one is Ramsey Cascades in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When the water is flowing, this waterfall is incredible. The trail to Ramsey Cascades is rated as the most difficult waterfall trails in the Smokys. The trail to Rainbow Falls is rated as third most difficult, but is a walk in the park compared to the hike to Ramsey Cascades. If you attempt this trail, be prepared for a very strenuous workout (and a hot tub when you get back to your...

Grotto Falls Panorama – E0568

Over the past two shows I’ve had so many requests for additional panoramas to match the ones on display, that I have put together another small batch of matching panoramas. This is a fairly easy hike with a rewarding cool (ice cold) pool to dip your feet into when you arrive. If you really want to cool off, a walk behind the waterfall is just the...

Dark Hollow Falls is probably the most visited Waterfall in Shenandoah National Park. It’s a relatively easy hike down a fireroad to this 70 foot high waterfall. Visit my website for available sizes and today’s extraordinary...

Rainbow Falls Panorama – 9083

Rainbow Falls is an 80 foot high waterfall in the Smoky Mountains. If you get there late afternoon, you may see a rainbow formed in the mist that surrounds the falls. You can also see a “moonbow” if you get there after civil twilight and before civil sunrise, and when the full moon is in the correct position. Obviously this is much more difficult than getting there for a rainbow. The hike to Rainbow Falls is about 5.4 miles round-trip, with a 1,500 foot rise over the 2.7 mile distance. It is a moderate hike, but well worth the time if there has been a good deal of rain. This is the first...
