The Early Days
I was just 11 years old when I started with a box camera and had built my first darkroom. After seeing my interest in photography, my parents’ let me use their Argus C3, a 35mm rangefinder, nicknamed “the brick.” A few years later I purchased my first SLR, a Miranda F. Not one of those three cameras had a light meter, so every exposure was based on experience and a developing knowledge of the relationship among light, shutter speed and aperture. I used the Miranda until 1979 when I bought a Nikon — this time with a light meter. By then I had moved onto color and was shooting mainly Ektachrome slide film, and still processing my own images. In 2003 I bought my first digital SLR. My experience in a wet darkroom proved invaluable to me in my transition to a digital workflow.
The Present
My favorite time of day is that hour or so which surrounds sunrise. It is a very fickle time of day. The color and quality of light changes by the second. It is nearly impossible to predict how the sky and clouds will look as you drive or hike to your location. However, it is worth the extra effort because dawn is the most intriguing and beautiful time of day. The air is still and clear. Reflections abound on inland waters. There is peace and solitude. The sounds of nature surround you. If you are persistent, you can capture a moment that no one else has seen.
That moment is the essence of my photography.
