This is one of my favorite black and whites from Shenandoah National Park. We had gone to the park for the express purpose of hiking White Oak Trail. When we arrived on skyline drive we were greeted with conditions that are fairly rare in this area. There was very dense fog, high gusty winds and freezing temperatures. Under these conditions, a thick layer of frost accumulates on one side of all of the foliage making some pretty remarkable scenes. At this time, I had a full beard, which, under normal conditions, kept my face a bit warmer than bare skin. However, I achieved the same effect as all of the...

A bit of a mixture this week.
First a recommendation for an album from 1971. The group is Skara Brae, and this self titled album is the first recording of anyone adding harmonies to Gaelic Folk songs. This was this group’s first and only album. If you like something a bit different, try this one. This is the first track of the album.
My next recommendation is for Harry Manx. If you haven’t either heard him or heard of him, give this a listen. Try Bread and Buddah for a first listen. You’ll hear his mix of folk, blues and hindustani music.
Stile Antico is a pretty amazing choral...

Today’s Photograph of the Day is from Havre de Grace, MD. My wife and I have stopped here many mornings over a number of years. Many mornings were rainy, foggy, snowy, overcast, really windy, or colorless. But, if you are persistent, you may be rewarded with an absolutely gorgeous sunrise as good as this one. I tried to do something a little different with this photograph. If I was successful, then it will look to you as though the pilings are supporting the sky. I have additional photographs from this sunrise on my...

I have been visiting Beavertail Light in Jamestown, RI as long as I can remember. Beavertail is probably one of the most popular locations in RI for photographers and painters. It is also very popular for fishing, walking, jogging, or just relaxing.
This photograph was from a late afternoon just as a large storm was ending. The waves were very active, and the sky had that crisp newly scrubbed look. The waves had so much energy, and the water was moving so fast, that I ended up taking 85 shots just to get the one I wanted. Most of my shots were just a little too early, or a little too late, to get the...

This is a detail from the third Roanoke River Light, which was built in 1887. This lighthouse which stood in Albemarle Sound was decommissioned in 1940 and then purchased in 1955 for use as a private residence. It is screw pile light house, so it had to barged to the mainland to be used as a private dwelling. In 2003 a replica of the second Roanoke River Light was built in Plymouth, North Carolina in conjunction with the Maritime Museum. The third Roanoke River Light fell into disrepair after the owner died. In 2007 it was purchased and moved to its current location in Colonial Park in Edenton, NC,...
